Morocco is a tipping country, showing gratitude with cash is firmly built into the traditional way of doing things, and the riad is part of that system. Our staff are outstandingly honest and obliging (written from experience of their less commendable confreres), and tipping is an unembarrassing celebration of good service. But it is not obligatory.

It is customary for a couple to tip Abdel Illah, the manager, around 200 dirhams per week, and Amal around half of that, no matter that she never stops working. If either of them has achieved something particularly spectacular or done something well beyond the call of duty, then more, if you only stayed a night or two, then less.
